Iranian state media has confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, marking a pivotal moment for the country and raising concerns about regional stability and Iran’s political future.
The announcement came early Sunday, hours after US President Donald Trump said Khamenei’s death could present Iranians with their “greatest chance” to “take back” their country.
According to state reports, Khamenei, 86, was killed in an airstrike that struck his compound in central Tehran. Satellite imagery from Airbus showed extensive damage at the site following heavy bombardment.

State television described the late leader as someone who “consistently stood among the people and at the forefront of his responsibilities,” saying he confronted what officials refer to as “global arrogance.”
The development follows a wave of strikes launched Saturday by the United States and Israel on targets across Iran. Tehran has since responded with retaliatory attacks on Israel and US bases in the region.
The Israel Defense Forces said its operations in Tehran were aimed at sites where senior political and security officials were believed to be meeting.
