The Nigeria Police Force on Thursday arrested former presidential aide and lawyer, Okoi Obono-Obla, over allegations of forgery and obtaining entry into the legal profession by false pretence.
In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Cross River State Police Command, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, said the arrest followed a petition submitted to the Commissioner of Police.
The police dismissed claims circulating on social media that Obono-Obla was abducted by unknown persons in Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State, describing such reports as false and misleading.
According to the statement, Obono-Obla was lawfully arrested at about 12:00 noon on February 19, 2026, along Abuja Park in Ugep, in connection with allegations bordering on forgery and the fraudulent acquisition of admission, professional qualification, and entry into the legal profession.
Police said the arrest was carried out in line with extant laws and within the constitutional and statutory powers of the Nigeria Police Force to investigate allegations of criminal conduct.

Following his arrest, Obono-Obla was taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Calabar, where investigations are ongoing.
The command said his legal counsel has been notified and is participating in the process, while his family has also been informed of his whereabouts.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the Command categorically states that allegations of kidnapping or involvement of unidentified security outfits are false, unfounded, and entirely without factual basis,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Bar Association said it is monitoring the case. The Chairman of the NBA Calabar Branch, Enome Amatey, expressed concern over what he described as unclear circumstances surrounding the arrest and said the association had yet to receive official confirmation of the agency responsible at the time of his comments.
Amatey said the association would ensure that due process is followed and that Obono-Obla is not detained beyond the constitutionally permitted period without proper legal justification, adding that the NBA’s human rights committee could intervene if necessary.
