
The United States Marine Corps has confirmed the death of 21-year-old Lance Cpl. Chukwuemeka E. Oforah, a Florida native of Nigerian descent, who fell overboard while serving in the Caribbean.
Oforah reportedly went overboard from the USS Iwo Jima on February 7 during active operations at sea. A large-scale search and rescue mission was immediately launched, involving five naval vessels and ten aircraft.
Despite three days of intensive efforts, rescue teams were unable to recover him.
The search was officially suspended on February 10, and he was subsequently declared deceased.
Military authorities have stated that a formal investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

At the time of the incident, Oforah was supporting ongoing regional security operations aboard the USS Iwo Jima, a key vessel deployed for maritime missions in the Caribbean.
His passing marks a heartbreaking loss for his family, fellow Marines, and the broader Nigerian-American community, as they mourn a young life cut short in the line of duty.
