The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially set the dates for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The commission announced that the Presidential and National Assembly elections will hold on February 20, 2027, while the governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled for March 6, 2027.
INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, revealed the election timetable at a press briefing in Abuja on Friday. He stated that the commission had completed its preparations despite delays in the passage of the amended Electoral Act, which remains under consideration in the National Assembly.
The commission noted that while the timetable has been submitted to lawmakers, some activities in the election schedule could be affected depending on when the amended Electoral Act is enacted.

“This announcement underscores our commitment to ensuring that Nigerians have a clear and credible electoral calendar ahead of the 2027 elections,” Amupitan said, emphasizing the need for all stakeholders to cooperate to guarantee a smooth electoral process.
Political analysts have welcomed the early announcement, noting that it provides parties and candidates sufficient time to prepare for the polls.
However, the delayed passage of the Electoral Act continues to raise questions about potential last-minute adjustments to INEC’s planned schedule.
INEC assured Nigerians that more details, including the full schedule of activities and guidelines for voters, will be released in due course.
