In a video that has gone viral, Nigeria’s Minister of Works, David Umahi, openly boasted about ordering the forceful takeover of a woman’s land after she resisted his actions.
Umahi, a former governor of Ebonyi State, admitted that he had not initially planned to seize the property, but the woman’s opposition prompted him to act.
According to the video, the woman challenged Umahi’s attempts to acquire her land, refusing to sell or vacate, and reportedly protested the move by confronting government officials and insisting on her legal rights.

“I didn’t want to take the woman’s remaining land, but when she started causing trouble, I said they should go and acquire the land.
I’m the one, not anyone else,” Umahi said.
The minister’s remarks have sparked outrage.
Residents of Ebonyi State have long complained of forced demolitions and land seizures under government authority, which have caused trauma, displacement, and financial hardship.
Many see Umahi’s actions as part of a broader pattern where officials punish citizens who challenge their authority.
The video has renewed calls for transparency and adherence to the law in government-led land acquisitions, as well as stronger protections for citizens’ property rights.
