A police inspector has lost his life during a rescue operation aimed at saving a man abducted by suspected kidnappers in Olorunda Village, Ojongbodu, in Oyo West Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The incident followed a distress call received by the police after armed men reportedly invaded a residence in the community in the early hours of the day and kidnapped a man identified as Haruna Lawal.
The attackers were also said to have escaped with the victim’s motorcycle after the abduction.
Upon receiving the report, police operatives were immediately mobilised and deployed to the area to track the kidnappers and secure the victim’s release.
The officers launched a search operation, combing surrounding bushes and routes believed to have been used by the suspects.

During the rescue mission, the police team encountered the kidnappers, leading to a confrontation. In the course of the operation, a police inspector was fatally shot while bravely attempting to protect the abducted man and repel the attackers.
The suspects eventually abandoned their victim and fled the scene.
The kidnapped man was rescued alive but sustained injuries during the ordeal.
He was promptly taken to a government hospital in Oyo town, where he is currently receiving medical attention.
Security sources disclosed that some of the fleeing suspects may have sustained injuries, and a manhunt has been launched to track them down.
Police authorities have ordered a thorough investigation into the incident and intensified patrols in the area.
The death of the inspector has been described as a tragic loss, with the police reaffirming their commitment to fighting crime and ensuring the safety of residents across the state.
Members of the public have also been urged to provide useful information that could assist in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
