Court Dismisses Anyanwu’s Suit Over PDP National Secretary Position

The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a fresh suit filed by Senator Samuel Anyanwu seeking recognition as the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), bringing an end to his latest legal effort over the position.

Justice Mohammed Umar ruled that the case had become academic after it was confirmed that Anyanwu’s tenure as PDP National Secretary expired in December 2025.

As a result, the court held that there was no longer any issue requiring judicial determination.
Anyanwu had approached the court in February 2025, asking for orders restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising or acting on any PDP correspondence not signed by him.

He also sought to stop the former Acting National Chairman of the party, Umar Damagun, from sending documents to INEC without his countersignature.

During proceedings, the PDP, Sunday Udeh-Okoye, Dr Ali Odela, and Setonji Koshoedo were joined as additional defendants.

At the hearing, Anyanwu’s counsel informed the court that developments had overtaken the matter and applied to withdraw the suit.

Although some defendants asked for costs to be awarded against Anyanwu, the court dismissed the case without awarding costs, noting that the situation was not caused by any party.

The dispute over the PDP National Secretary position began after Anyanwu left the office to contest the 2023 Imo State governorship election, triggering prolonged internal party disagreements.
