Saida, the mother of late Nigerian Afrobeat singer Afeez Adeshina, popularly known as Destiny Boy, has spoken publicly for the first time about the circumstances surrounding her son’s death.
Destiny Boy, who rose to fame in 2019 after releasing a Fuji-style cover of Davido’s hit song, passed away on Sunday, January 18, 2026, after battling a long-term illness identified as “Ogu oru,” a condition said to be linked to recurrent seizures.
In a video that surfaced online on Monday, Saida revealed that her son had been dealing with the illness for a long time, but the family chose to keep it private because of his celebrity status. She explained that his condition was managed through a combination of medical care, traditional treatment and spiritual support.
Saida disclosed that a traditional ruler, Oba Edu Ifayomi, was closely involved in Destiny Boy’s care and provided financial support throughout the period of his treatment.

According to her, the singer suffered a seizure shortly after attending activities related to his child’s naming ceremony. He was subsequently taken to the hospital and later transferred to other medical facilities as his condition worsened.
She added that the illness had previously taken a serious toll on the singer but was often brought under control.
She dismissed rumours circulating on social media linking Destiny Boy’s death to money rituals, describing the claims as false and baseless.
Recalling his final days, Saida said the singer remained active and hopeful, noting that he had interacted with fans, bought items for people around him and even spoke about an upcoming performance shortly before his death.
Destiny Boy had welcomed his first child in November 2024.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that investigations into the singer’s death are ongoing, assuring the public that further updates will be communicated in due course.
