
Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested a 70-year-old man, Okon Akpan, along with three other suspects over alleged attempted murder and involvement in cult-related activities in Uruk Anam Local Government Area of the state.
The arrest, described as a major operational breakthrough, highlights the command’s intensified efforts to clamp down on violent crimes and restore public safety across the region.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, disclosed in a statement issued in Uyo on Friday that the suspects were apprehended following credible intelligence linked to a petition alleging attempted murder, malicious damage, and cultism.
Acting swiftly on the information, detectives carried out a coordinated operation that led to the successful arrest of the suspects on March 20, 2026, at Ikot Asukpong Village in Uruk Anam LGA.
The other suspects were identified as John Samson, 45; Emmanuel Asuquo, 50; and Idorenyin Umoh, 22.

During the operation, security operatives recovered one locally fabricated pistol and two long guns from the suspects, strengthening allegations of their involvement in violent and unlawful activities within the community.
The police command assured residents that the situation in the area remains calm and fully under control, noting that proactive measures have been implemented to prevent any potential breakdown of law and order.
Authorities also confirmed that investigations are ongoing to track down other members of the suspected criminal network.
The Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, urging members of the public to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information.
The suspects are expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
